What happens at your urgent dentist appointment

You’ll follow a simple, structured four‑step process so you know exactly what to expect at Thames Dental & Skin.

Focused assessment

We listen to your symptoms and medical history, then examine the affected teeth, gums and surrounding areas so we understand what is happening and how urgently it needs attention.

On‑the‑spot diagnostics

Where needed, we take digital X‑rays or photographs to see the root cause clearly and decide whether you may need treatments such as a filling, root canal or extraction at a separate appointment.

Same‑day relief where possible

Your dentist may provide immediate temporary care where appropriate – for example a temporary filling, smoothing a sharp edge, re‑cementing a crown, draining an abscess or prescribing suitable medication.

Clear plan for next steps

Before you leave, we explain your diagnosis in plain language, outline treatment options and provide a written plan with transparent fees so you can book any follow‑up visits with confidence.

This appointment is designed to assess and stabilise your dental emergency; more complex treatments such as full root canal therapy or extractions are usually booked as separate visits.

The best dental practice ever! And I speak with many decades of experience of less talented dentists. Dr Bravis is not only very skilled and well qualified, she is also gentle and engaging and never hurts and so I no longer dread visits to the dentist and am prepared to travel from central London. I’ve had two dental implants and my front teeth built up recently and all went very well. Andrea, the dental nurse, was very kind and reassuring when my jaw was being drilled and Tina on reception is very helpful and knowledgeable. I can highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed.

The whole team has been so friendly and approachable at every appointment and quick to respond to my queries. Dr Bravis has done a super job for me with my Invisalign treatment. She has always been honest about saying when I don’t need work done too which I feel is not always what happens in some private sectors. I value and trust her opinions.

I have had a lot of dental problems over the years and I am delighted to say that I have finally achieved stability after having broken, painful teeth for so many years. Thank you for giving me my confidence back!

FAQs

A dental emergency is any situation involving acute pain, trauma, or risk to the tooth, surrounding structures, or overall health that requires prompt assessment rather than a routine appointment. Common dental emergencies include:

Severe or unremitting toothache — pain that is constant, waking you at night, or not controlled by standard pain relief.
Dental abscess — swelling, throbbing pain, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth, indicating infection that can spread if untreated.
Knocked-out tooth — a fully dislodged permanent tooth that may be reimplantable if attended to within an hour.
Broken or cracked tooth — sharp edges causing soft-tissue injury, or exposure of the nerve causing acute sensitivity.
Lost or broken crown, bridge, or veneer — particularly where the underlying tooth is sensitive or structurally at risk.
Dental trauma — any injury to the teeth, jaw, or mouth following an accident or impact.
Wisdom tooth pain with swelling — possible pericoronitis (infection around a partially erupted tooth).

If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, call us and describe your symptoms — we will advise on whether you need to be seen immediately.

Yes — we aim to see emergency patients the same day or the next working day, subject to availability. When you call with a dental emergency, our team will assess the urgency of your situation and allocate an appointment as promptly as possible.

We strongly encourage you to call us directly rather than waiting — dental emergencies rarely resolve on their own, and early assessment typically leads to simpler and less costly treatment.

The emergency dental consultation at £75 is a diagnostic appointment. The dentist will examine the problem area, take any necessary X-rays, establish a diagnosis, and — where possible — provide immediate relief (such as dressing a painful tooth or re-cementing a lost crown temporarily).

If the situation requires further treatment — such as root canal therapy, an extraction, or surgical intervention — a separate appointment will be booked. Dr Bravis and the team always explain clearly what is needed and why before any further treatment is carried out, and provide a written cost plan so there are no surprises.

NHS 111 provides telephone triage and can refer you to an urgent dental care centre, but cannot guarantee same-day or in-person assessment — and access to NHS urgent dental provision in Surrey has become significantly more limited in recent years. NHS urgent care may also have a charge (Band 1, currently £26.80 in England) for the initial appointment, with further charges for any treatment carried out.

A private emergency consultation at Thames Dental & Skin gives you a confirmed appointment, assessment by an experienced clinician who can take X-rays, provide pain relief, and plan treatment immediately — all within a single visit. For patients already registered with us, we also have access to your dental history, which aids in faster, more accurate diagnosis.

Our emergency dental consultation is priced at £75. This covers the clinical assessment, examination, and any advice or immediate interim relief the dentist can provide at that appointment. If X-rays are required, these may be an additional cost, which will be confirmed before they are taken.

Any follow-up treatment required — such as a filling, root canal, or extraction — is priced separately and explained clearly before any work begins.

Act quickly — time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it very briefly under clean water — do not scrub or dry it. If possible, place it back into the socket immediately and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it in position.

If you cannot reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a small container of milk, or between your cheek and gum. Do not store it in plain water or let it dry out. Call us immediately — reimplantation is most likely to succeed if carried out within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury.

Yes — a dental abscess is a clinical emergency and should be assessed as soon as possible. An abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread beyond the tooth into the surrounding bone, the jaw, or — in severe cases — the airway. Swelling, throbbing pain, fever, and a general feeling of being unwell are all signs that require urgent attention.

At your emergency appointment, Dr Bravis or a senior clinician will assess the source and extent of the infection. Treatment may involve drainage, prescription antibiotics, and a plan for the underlying cause (such as root canal therapy or extraction) at a follow-up appointment. Do not wait for an abscess to resolve on its own.

Yes — wisdom tooth pain is one of the more common dental emergencies we see. Pain around a partially erupted wisdom tooth is often caused by pericoronitis, where the overlying gum flap becomes inflamed and infected. This can cause significant discomfort, difficulty opening the mouth, and in some cases swelling.

At your emergency appointment, the area will be assessed and cleaned, and antibiotics prescribed if infection is present. We will advise on whether the wisdom tooth should be removed and, where surgical extraction is needed, provide a clear referral pathway.

A lost crown or bridge is not always an emergency in terms of acute pain, but it does need prompt attention. The exposed tooth beneath the crown may be sensitive to temperature, and without the crown's protection it is vulnerable to further damage or fracture. In some cases, a lost crown can be temporarily re-cemented at the emergency appointment while a permanent solution is planned.

Bring the crown with you if you still have it — in good condition, it can sometimes be re-bonded. Do not leave a crown off for an extended period, as the underlying tooth and adjacent teeth can shift.

Yes — we regularly see emergency patients travelling from Kingston upon Thames, Esher, Surbiton, Walton-on-Thames, Molesey, Hinchley Wood, and Long Ditton, as well as from further afield across Surrey. You do not need to be an existing patient to access our emergency appointment service.

Please call us directly to check availability on the day — our team will do everything possible to fit you in promptly.
