What is a PDO COG Thread Lift?

A PDO COG Thread Lift is a minimally invasive thread face lift using absorbable PDO threads with tiny cogs (barbs) along their length. These barbs grip the underside of the skin so that, when placed, the threads physically reposition sagging tissue upward – instantly lifting the jowls, cheeks and mid‑face.

As the threads dissolve over 6–9 months, they stimulate new collagen and elastin, meaning the lift is supported by genuinely improved skin quality long after the threads themselves have gone.

Every PDO thread lift at Thames Dental and Skin is carried out personally by Dr Theodora Bravis, who will assess whether a COG thread lift, Mono Threads, or a combination is the right approach for your face.

Still confused about PDO, COG and Mono threads?

You’re not alone – the terminology is confusing. Here’s the simple version:

If your main concern is skin quality and subtle tightening, see our Mono Threads treatment. If you want a visible lifting effect, you’re on the right page.

What will a PDO COG Thread Lift do for my face?

Lift sagging jowls

COG threads grip and reposition loose tissue along the jawline, visibly softening jowls and restoring a cleaner lower face.

Define the jawline without surgery

Placed along the mandible, threads create a sharper, more sculpted jawline with no incisions or general anaesthetic.

Rejuvenate the mid‑face

Lifting the cheeks subtly repositions volume upward, reducing the appearance of deep nasolabial folds and refreshing the whole face.

Reduce nasolabial folds and marionette lines

As the mid‑face lifts, nose‑to‑mouth lines and marionette lines naturally soften, without the need for filler‑only approaches.

Where can a PDO COG Thread Lift be used?

How does a PDO Thread Lift work?

After a detailed consultation and facial mapping, Dr Bravis will apply local anaesthetic to the treatment areas for comfort. Fine cannulas are used to introduce the PDO COG threads beneath the skin, which are then gently tensioned to lift sagging tissue into a more youthful position.

The procedure typically takes 60–90 minutes. Results are visible immediately, and continue to improve over the following weeks as collagen builds around the threads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PDO threads, COG threads and Mono Threads?

PDO (polydioxanone) is the absorbable medical material the threads are made from. COG Threads are PDO threads with barbs that physically lift sagging tissue – used in a thread face lift. Mono Threads are smooth PDO threads that tighten skin and stimulate collagen without physically lifting. All three terms are related: PDO is the material; COG and Mono are the two main types of thread made from it.

PDO COG Thread Lift vs Mono Threads – which is right for me?

Choose a PDO COG Thread Lift if your main concern is visible sagging – jowls, jawline definition or a drooping mid‑face. Choose Mono Threads if your main concern is skin quality, elasticity and subtle tightening. Dr Bravis will recommend the best fit at consultation, and the two can be combined for patients who need both lift and skin quality improvements.

PDO Thread Lift vs a surgical face lift – what’s the difference?

A surgical face lift removes excess skin under general anaesthetic, with significant downtime and long‑term results. A PDO thread lift is minimally invasive, performed under local anaesthetic in 60–90 minutes, with results lasting 12–18 months. Thread lifts suit patients with early to moderate sagging who want a refreshed, defined look without surgery.

PDO Thread Lift vs dermal fillers – what’s the difference?

Dermal fillers add volume; COG threads lift tissue. For many patients, thread lifts and fillers work beautifully together – threads reposition sagging tissue, and fillers restore volume where it’s been lost. Dr Bravis will often plan both in the same facial rejuvenation strategy.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes. PDO is a biocompatible material used in medicine for decades and is safely absorbed by the body over time. When performed by an experienced clinician like Dr Bravis, thread lifts have a strong safety record. A thorough consultation and medical history review is always the first step.

Is a PDO Thread Lift painful?

Most patients tolerate the treatment very well. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the areas before the threads are placed, so you’ll feel pressure and occasional tugging rather than sharp pain. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.

What is the downtime after a thread lift?

Most patients experience mild swelling, bruising and tenderness for 2–7 days, with some tightness in the treated areas for 1–2 weeks. You can usually return to work within a few days, but heavy exercise, facial treatments and dental work should be paused for 2–3 weeks.

How long do PDO COG Thread Lift results last?

Results from a PDO COG Thread Lift typically last 12–18 months, depending on your age, skin quality, lifestyle and how your body metabolises the threads. The collagen stimulation continues to benefit the skin even after the threads themselves have dissolved.

How soon will I see results?

You’ll see an immediate lift straight after the procedure, although some initial swelling can mask the final result for a few days. Results continue to refine over 2–3 months as new collagen builds around the threads.

Can a PDO Thread Lift be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Thread lifts often work best as part of a broader plan including dermal fillers, Profhilo, polynucleotides, anti‑wrinkle injections and LED light therapy. Dr Bravis will design a layered plan based on your goals.

Am I a suitable candidate for a PDO Thread Lift?

Most patients with early to moderate sagging in the jawline, jowls or mid‑face are suitable. If skin laxity is very advanced, a surgical face lift may give better results. A consultation is the best way to find out.

Do you offer PDO COG Thread Lifts to patients from Kingston, Esher, Surbiton and across Surrey?
